Gender Lens

This feature is relevant to Australia and New Zealand Accounts only.

Gender Lens standard fields are designed to help bring the gender agenda into focus for grantees and grantmakers.

Gender wise grantmaking occurs when grantees are encouraged to consider the social disadvantage women, girls and people with non-binary gender identities face when designing and delivering grants-funded projects and programs, and where grantmakers themselves consider gender when setting and reviewing funding priorities.

Standard fields have been introduced to help make gender wise grantmaking easier for SmartyGrants users:

Project Inequity Results – Actual

Type: Multi Part

Gender Lens Results – Actual

Type: Multi-part

Text:  What percentage of this project/program's beneficiaries were women or girls?

Hint: As a gender-wise grantmaker, we want to know if our grantees have considered gender in the design and management of their initiatives. One way of assessing this is to see if grantees have tracked the gender of their beneficiaries. If you don’t have enough information to supply actual percentages, please tick 'unknown'.

Built in Logic applies:

Applicants will be shown different questions depending on their answer to the first question.

Where an applicant’s answer is equal to 50% or higher, they will be asked how they measured the gender split of their beneficiaries.

Where their answer is lower than 50%, they will be asked how they measured the gender split, why they did not reach women and girls in at least equal numbers to men and boys, and what they could do differently next time.

Where they pick ‘unknown’, they will be asked what they could do differently next time to obtain a better understanding of the initiative’s gender impacts.

If % answered is equal to or greater than 50%

If % answered is less than 50%

If answered 'unknown':

What does 'Gender Lens' mean?

To apply a gender lens is to intentionally examine and highlight issues of gender. A gender-wise program is one that considers the different needs and circumstances of people of all genders within the target beneficiary group.

Why should I use the Gender Lens standard fields?

Different genders are socially conditioned to occupy different roles. They face different expectations and challenges. These biases are often subtle or invisible – as such, treating different genders equally does not necessarily result in equal outcomes. In order to be fair, you must be prepared to treat different genders differently; to remove barriers and to encourage inclusion. You can help ignite this process by applying a “gender lens” to your grantmaking, and by encouraging your grantees to do the same.

How can I learn more about the Gender Lens agenda?
Grantmakers should check out the Gender-wise Toolkit, produced by the Australian Women Donors Network: http://www.womendonors.org.au/gender_wise_toolkit.php or, SmartyGrants users can download the November 2016 'Gender Lens' edition of Grants Management Intelligence here: https://smartygrants.com.au/uploads/general/SG/GMI/GMI0416.pdf

How can I educate grantseekers about the Gender Lens agenda?
We have developed a plain language help sheet that you can refer grantseekers to. It includes checklists they can use to highlight the gender implications of their work. See http://www.fundingcentre.com.au/help/gender-lens
